The peace of Europe depends upon the will of Russia. If she decides to support Servia in the field nothing can save Europe from a great war. Mr. Asquith in the House of Commons yesterday afternoon said the situation at the moment was one of extreme gravity, and the British government were doing everything to circumscribe the area of possible conflict. Later news shows how thoroughly the Prime Minister's fears are justified.
Messages from Athens and St. Petersburg say the Austrians have bombarded Belgrade, doing considerable damage to the city and to the great railway bridge over the Save. The Austrian plan, says one rumour, does not promise decisive military action in the first two weeks. The military advance against Servia continues, but the strict censorship keeps the world in ignorance of events.
